Krishna River is one of the major east flowing rivers of Indian peninsula. Originating in the Mahabaleshwar hills in the Western Ghats in Maharashtra State at an elevation of 1340 m, the river traverses through states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and flows into the Bay of Bengal. The river has a length of 1392 km from its origin until its confluence with sea.
The Thangarabalu Small Hydel Project is located on Krishna River about 13 km downstream of the Narayanpur dam in Karnataka. It is at a distance of about 120 km from nearest district town of Raichur and can be reached via Lingasugur.
The project nearing completion envisages utilizing the spills/releases from Narayanpur dam and a series of rapids present in the river bed over a length of about 3 km to advantageously generate power.
